Arnold Schönberg regarded Norbert von Hannenheim as one of his most gifted students. There are also some reports of his classmates that show his special position among the master students. Erich Schmid reported: «Hannenheim was absolutely independent in his judgments and did not allow himself to be instructed by Schönberg. He was probably the only one who unrestrainedly contradicted Schönberg.»
